Antioxidants play a role, too, and they’re plentiful in this serum—though again, the same antioxidants show up in lots of Clinique products, diminishing Smart Custom Repair Serum’s must-have status for those already using another good Clinique product. When you apply a product loaded with antioxidants, these ingredients shore up skin’s defenses as they reduce inflammation and, in some cases, stimulate healthy collagen production.

Smart Custom Repair Serum

This fragrance-free serum from Clinique makes some intriguing claims, but before we get to those, it’s worth pointing out that the formula isn’t as unique or customized as it seems. It mostly contains crossover ingredients from Clinique’s Repairwear Laser Focus serum and their Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector, with the latter being the most similar to Smart Custom Repair Serum. Despite the overlapping formulas, Clinique Smart makes some claims that the other two Clinique products do not. But let’s see if it’s really a smarter option!

The big claim (and one we’re highly skeptical of) is that this serum can somehow “sense” where your skin needs repair and where it doesn’t. It’s supposed to be able to identify and then respond to the differing “signals” skin sends when, for example, it’s tone is uneven, dark spots are present, and loss of elasticity has occurred. Clinique maintains these signals differ depending on the state of one’s skin, hence their claim that this serum provides customized repair.

Here’s how it’s supposed to work: You apply this serum and once it senses where the trouble spots are, it releases repairing ingredients to improve the concern, and where no damage is detected, it moves on. Consider that the face is a small area, so how would ingredients, such as the emollients this contains, only be able to spread over certain areas? How would any of the plant extracts or the salicylic acid this contains know to go to one area of damaged skin cells but not another? The science isn’t there, but even if it was possible then all of the other Clinique products that contain these same ingredients (and there are several) would do the same thing.

As with any well-formulated serum (or moisturizer) this contains barrier-repairing ingredients that can, to some extent, reduce signs of sun damage. Barrier-repairing ingredients are an important part of serums and moisturizers because research has shown sun damage impairs skin’s barrier, leading to a host of skin problems (Sources: Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, October 2012, pages 75-81; and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, October 2012, pages 17,111-17,116). So, it’s “smart” that Clinique included such ingredients in this serum’s formula, but they’re hardly the only brand using them.

Cell-communicating ingredients such as the peptide this serum contains, are believed to be able to attach to receptor sites on skin cells, where the ingredient can “tell” misbehaving, damaged cells to start making better, healthier cells. Assuming the right “connections” are made, good cellular communication results, and, over time, skin begins to look and act younger—because the cells are now communicating like they did before they became damaged. Keep in mind these ingredients go to all cells with receptor sites for them, not just a select few showing signs of damage. This entire category of ingredients is fascinating and absolutely the future of anti-aging skin care—but, just as with barrier-repair ingredients, Clinique is hardly the only brand capitalizing on it.

One cause for concern is that this serum contains a higher-than-usual amount of grapefruit peel extract. Appearing as Citrus grandis (grapefruit) peel extract on the ingredient list, the peel is loaded with a class of ingredients known as furanocoumarins and coumarins which are primarily responsible for what’s known as a phototoxic reaction when skin is exposed to the sun—the result can leave skin discolored (Source: Journal of Food and Agriculture, October 2013, pages 10,677–10,684). Suffice to say, this is not the result you want when using a product promising to improve skin tone, as this serum claims! If you opt to use this product, please make sure you’re protecting your skin from UV light exposure every day, rain or shine. Forgoing this important step can make the grapefruit peel extract a potential problem that gets in the way of this serum being able to produce good results.

Although this product isn’t any smarter than other Clinique serums to those on our list of Best Serums, it’s an overall good formula for all skin types. It feels light, is very silky, and can double as your foundation primer. The matte-finish formula contains “brightening” mineral pigments for a subtle radiance that softly perks up a dull complexion, a benefit many other serums have, too.

If you’re wondering about the salicylic acid this serum contains, the amount seems to be way too low to benefit skin, not to mention this product’s pH of 6.1 is far beyond the range salicylic acid needs to function as an exfoliant.

Note: Clinique also sells a 1.7-ounce size of this serum for $89 and a 3.4-ounce size for $154.

ASCORBYL GLUCOSIDE

What’s In Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum?

SILICONES

Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum contains its fair share of silicones.

Some, like cyclopentasiloxane, help the serum spread on the skin before evaporating into thin air.

Others, like dimothicone, stay around, filling in fine lines and wrinkles so they look smaller. They also create a breathable barrier that prevents water loss but still allows active ingredients to get through.

I know a lot of you don’t like silicones. If they’re all a product has (like too often happens), I’d agree with you. But here, they just play supporting characters to all the goodies below. I’m fine with that.

ASCORBYL GLUCOSIDE

Ascorbyl glucoside is a stable form of Vitamin C. Translation: it lasts (and works for) longer, even in the presence of air and light.

Once it penetrates your skin, ascorbic glucoside breaks down into L-Ascorbic Acid, the pure form of Vitamin C. Here’s what it does:

  • Has antioxidant propertiesthat fight free radicals
  • Stimulate the production of collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm
  • Inhibits the synthesis of melanin, fading away dark spots and hyperpigmentation

MULBERRY EXTRACT

Vitamin C ain’t the only thing in Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum that can fade away dark spots.

Science says that mulberry extract inhibits the formation of melanin too. That’s thanks to two of its components, Oxyresveratrol and Mulberroside F.

The catch? These studies were done on animals or petri dishes. We don’t know if they do the same on humans yet.

Detailed review of Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Serum. See what real experts and actual users have to say about this face serum.

Detailed Opinion:

Texture/Feel

Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Serum is a peach-colored, water-based serum.

While it does not contain any oil products, the texture of the serum is very silicone feeling. This face serum didn’t leave a greasy feeling on my skin, but did make my skin feel void of any hydration, which is common with these types of serums. While my skin didn’t feel dry when applying it, it did give off the appearance of dull, dry skin.

Application

Applying the Clinique Smart Custom-Repair face serum is super simple, and should be incorporated into your daytime and nighttime routine.

While most serums should be followed up with a face moisturizer, this serum specifically instructs to use an SPF of 15 or higher after daytime application, so I made sure to follow that instruction. I tend to avoid silicone-feeling serums during my daytime routine since they often leave me extra oily in my T-zone, but this serum didn’t seem to do that.

After cleansing and toning my skin, I applied two pumps of the Clinique serum onto my face. Unlike other serums, this product does not advise that you use it on your neck, so I stuck to the face area only rather than dragging it down. The product was easy to glide over my skin, and began to absorb with a rubbing motion.

Drying Time

The Clinique Smart Serum doesn’t really have a drying time. Since the product is thicker and more silicone-based, it feels dry upon application. I felt that as I rubbed it onto my face, it instantly dried once I moved onto a different area. In fact, I was able to immediately apply my skin moisturizer on top of the product without feeling like the serum still needed to absorb into my skin. This is why my skin was left feeling a bit dry and in need of hydration once the serum has been applied.

Smell

Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Serum has absolutely no odor. I’ve experienced some serums that smell when pumped into my hands, but the smell dissipated once applied to my skin, but this face serum has no odor period, which is actually something they advertise. So this is a great fit for anyone who is sensitive to certain scents, or any scents at all, in their skincare and beauty products.

Immediate Results

While I’ve given the Clinique Smart Serum a pretty good rating, the immediate results I experienced with this product were poor. I personally don’t like any silicone feeling products as they weirdly make my skin feel parched and oily at the same time. While this serum didn’t increase the oil on my face, it did leave my skin feeling dry upon application.

I also found that some of the product didn’t seem to fully absorb into my skin. I applied this product at night initially, and when I woke up in the morning and rubbed my face, a thick layer of product remained. Have you ever had it where you hands are dirty and you rub them together and balls of dirt come together? This was happening on my face, but with skincare products. My skin wasn’t actually dirty, but that’s how it felt when I woke up.

On a positive note, my face wasn’t any greasier than it normally is in the morning, which is rare for a serum that feels like this. However, beyond that positive immediate result, no other initial changes were noticed when first applied.

Long Term Results

My immediate results with the product were less than ideal, but the long term results (or result, in this case) were pretty impressive. I didn’t see a decrease in my fine lines or wrinkles, nor did I experience any lifting sensation to my skin, as advertised. However, when it came to evening out skin tone and texture, and increasing overall radiance of the skin, I was extremely impressed with the Clinique Smart Custom-Repair face serum. After just a few days of use, I began to see some of my annoying, extremely noticeable sunspots lighten up significantly. I even had multiple spots that I thought were freckles that completely disappeared after using the product.

I also found that the redness I often have around my nose, inner cheeks, and chin was completely gone. This is one of the first serums I’ve used that makes my skin look all one color, versus different splotches of discoloration and redness like I normally have. So when it came to evening out my skin tone, and leaving my skin looking radiant and dewy, the Clinique serum hit it out of the ballpark.

Unfortunately, that was really the only result I had with this serum, although it was a great one! I didn’t experience any other anti-aging results, which was a bit disappointing.

Price/Value

At $89.00 for 1.7 fl oz, the Clinique Smart Custom-Repair face serum is a great value for a certain audience. If you’re main skincare complaint is uneven skin tone and texture, this face serum is absolutely worth the money. Clinique also gives you more product than most other companies, which usually come in at around 1 fl oz. However, the cost of this Clinique face serum is definitely on the higher end of the price range for face serums, so if you’re looking for an anti-aging product that targets the many aspects of aging, this misses the mark completely.

A Product that Seems to Work!

My sister has been using this product for a year or two and really likes it. I have used Clinique Repairwear Serum and found I needed something more. Although I haven’t been using the Smart Custom Repair serum for very long, I already notice a firming of the area around my eyes. Looking forward to giving it a longer test drive!

Its all in the results!

I purchased the Clinique SMART Serum and saw immediate results. It targeted fine and deep wrinkles and smoothed them out. My skin tone is even, dark spots are fading and for the first time in a couple of decades I don’t need to wear foundation! I have been using Clinique for over forty years and this product line is the best I have used. I highly recommend this product and others in the SMART line.

Works

I did not receive a free sample, but the actual product was an awesome value! I find that the product is a great overall serum. I use it at night and find that it helps keep my skin healthy/balanced, as well as helps heal blemishes/wounds, and keeps wrinkles at bay. I like that it absorbs into my skin quickly as well. (I have combination skin, as well as dermatillomania)

Cosmetic Chemist Review, Ingredients: Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Serum – Targets Damaged Skin Cells Where Needed

Clinique’s newest advanced technology helps create your best skin ever with a serum that was precisely formulated for one skin in the world – yours! The Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Serum is formulated with several technologies that work together to deliver custom repair as needed, where needed, for all ages and all ethnicities.

How It Works: Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush – Contains 2 Types Of Bristles For Targeted Cleansing

Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Serum uses platinum standard precision repair technology to repair the damage you see and even the damage you don’t see, delivering custom repair that visibly addresses skin’s changing needs. Clinique Smart works best where skin needs it most, with visible improvement in treating uneven skin tone, dark spots, dullness, lines and wrinkles or firming after 12-weeks.

How The Technology Works Smartly

Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Serum provides custom repair by targeting the damage you see and the damage you don’t see. When damage occurs, your skin sends signals to nearby cells asking for the technology it needs to help repair itself. Our skin has a multitude of signals that it uses; there is constant cell signaling that occurs between the cells and different varieties of cells in the skin.

Some examples of signals include interleukin signals; our skin has over 30 cell communication molecules between inflammatory cells and skin cells. Another example is prostaglandin: our skin has over two-dozen signals that alert the pro and anti-inflammatory cells in our skin. Think of each type of damage in the skin like a lock that requires the right specialized repair molecule, or key, for repair. The technologies in Clinique Smart respond to these signals like a key fitting into a lock. The keys are only activated as a result of understanding the specific distress signal that they respond to, but are always ready to adjust to your skins ever-changing needs.

How The Serum Targets And Knows Where To Go

The serum uses an advanced formulation technology to target the repair for your unique skin damage. The specialized repair molecules only activate as a result of sensing the specific distress signal that they respond to. Until then, the technologies in Clinique Smart are always ready to adjust and respond to your skin’s ever-changing needs. Available on www.clinique.com.

Cosmetic Chemist Assessment:

“As a cosmetic chemist, I’ve seen other products on the market that claim to be “smart”. These products often contain a blend of ingredients that address different skin needs without providing a mechanism to specifically target a problem (i.e. the product acts more by random, rather than smart).

What Clinique has done is uncovered the fact that when your skin cells get damaged and need repair, they send out signals. The technologies in Clinique Smart respond to these signals like a key fitting into a lock. The keys are only activated as a result of understanding the specific distress signal that they respond to but are always ready to adjust to your skins ever-changing needs.” – Ron Robinson

The serum does not leave any greasy or slick layer on the skin that you would need to powder up. On average days (when the days are not chilly), just this serum is enough to hydrate and moisturize the skin sans the greasiness.

Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum Review

I know this serum is on each one of your secret wishlist 😛 It’s so much hyped and touted as the best treat that you can give to your skin. The serum claims to have the technology that can sense the needs of one’s skin and repair it accordingly. Also, it claims to target a bunch of skin problems, out of which, at least one you would consider as your major skin concern/issue. Read on to know whether it’s worth all the hype and of course whether it’s worth the precious bucks 😛

Price:

My Experience with Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum:

On two earlier occasions, I had almost picked up this serum and then kept it back looking at the price tag. It costs a steep Rs. 4500 for just 30 ml, so of course, I had to think twice, four times actually 😛 The last time at the store; however, I decided to take the plunge and grab the serum. I have a belief that there’s a magical product out there that would whoosh away all my skin problems. When I was paying the bill, I was totally convinced this was the one!

Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum

Coming to the packaging, 30 ml of the custom-repair serum comes in an opaque silver-grey sleek tube with a small press pump that dispenses a tiny amount of the non-fragrant medium consistency serum. As with most of the serums, it’s neither too runny nor too thick. Just one or two pumps are not enough to cover the entire face. The consistency and texture of the serum is smooth and kind of waxy, so once you apply it on your face, it just disappears into the skin that one is bound to pump out more quantity for other areas. The serum spreads onto a small area before disappearing, that’s the reason why you need more for a single time. Clinique advises us to use it twice a day, but you would end up finishing up the serum way too soon, maybe 1-1/2 months.

Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum

The serum does not leave any greasy or slick layer on the skin that you would need to powder up. On average days (when the days are not chilly), just this serum is enough to hydrate and moisturize the skin sans the greasiness.

It does not burn or sting the skin and is safe enough for application under or near the eye area too. Immediately after application, it makes the skin soft and smooth. You feel the effect when you are washing your face too. With continuous use, over two months, it has improved and refined the texture of my skin. It does impart radiance and makes the face smooth to touch and feel.

It is able to smoothen up a few fine lines as well, but you know, to see more prominent results, you would have to go through one more bottle 🙂 However, I kind of ruined the results I got from this serum with a salon facial which gave me horrible breakouts, and now I am back on anti-acne ointments and have dry skin issues. Once the acne clears up, I will be back to this serum.

Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum

One more thing, this serum can replace your primer (in my case Clinique Superprimer) because it lets makeup glide smoothly over. It does not prolong the wear of makeup though, but of course it doesn’t grease or melt your makeup away either. It does not feel heavy on the skin, feels as if you haven’t applied anything at all. I was wary after seeing the long list of ingredients thinking it would make the serum heavy, but it’s not heavy at all.

Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum

It takes care of blotchy skin texture and evens out complexion decently (with regular use).

There are a lot of good ingredients and extracts that I see at the back of the packaging, but at the same time, there are a lot of silicones like dimethicone and polysilicone too. I would say all that talk about sixth sense and auto repair is a lot hyped, it’s not what it’s touted to be. The texture and effects of the serum are very similar to MAC Marine Bright Formula Essence, but Clinique is the better one.

Coming to another important feature, this serum did not irritate my skin or cause breakouts (it means it’s non comedogenic), and it’s completely safe for sensitive skin. I think it’s the kind of serum that will work for all skin types from super sensitive to dry, oily, acne-prone, and normal skin.

Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum

Ranking it on a scale of 1 to 10 – it’s not below average, hence the rating would fall somewhere between 8 to 9, but certainly not 10. It’s a very good serum, but not an excellent one. It’s at least the best serum that I have used, MAC’s Marine Bright Serum comes a close second. It definitely is awesome for acne-prone and sensitive skin, no breakouts, and works well in refining up the texture and working on fine lines.

As mentioned earlier, currently, I have breakouts after the salon experience and I have given a break to this serum, would start using it after my breakouts clear up.

It gets a thumbs up from me, totally worth a try, but watch that price!

Pros of Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum:

  • Refines skin’s texture and imparts radiance to the skin with regular use.
  • Does not break out sensitive/acne-prone skin.
  • Suitable for all skin types.
  • Lightweight, non-greasy skin serum.
  • Lots of amazing ingredients beneficial for the skin listed out on the packaging.
  • Good packaging.
  • Works as a makeup primer too (makeup glides on smoothly above it)>
  • Evens out complexion with regular use.
  • Gets quickly absorbed.
  • Does not leave a greasy layer on the skin.
  • Works on blotchy skin.
  • Firms up the skin a bit.

Cons of Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum:

  • Has quite a few -cones.
  • You would need a little more than just 1 or 2 pumps for each time (because the serum quickly disappears into the skin).
  • Some may not like the waxy texture.
  • “Sixth sense, ” “custom repair” – that’s a hype! It works in giving you a good skin texture, but not miraculously, it will fall short of your expectations.

Would I Repurchase Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum?

Maybe! It’s the best skin serum I have used so far.

Do I Recommend Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum?

Yes, if you are tired of heavyweight skin serums that grease up your skin, then this one is for you if you don’t mind the splurge.
