Let L’Occitane Immortelle Reset Oil-in-Serum help reset your skin while you sleep

If there’s an award being given out for prettiest serum on your dresser, I think the L’Occitane Immortelle Reset Oil-in-Serum will win hands down!

I mean, look at it!

l

The beautiful gradient colour on the luxe glass bottle packaging is both eye-catching and pleasing to the eye. I do have a little gripe that the tactile texture of the cap and pump do not feel as luxurious as the bottle looks, but it is one I will overlook. A little more attention to that detail for future iterations might be nice 🙂

But we all know that there’s little use in a skincare product looking good, if it does not function as well as it claims, so it’s time to see just what is it it claims to do, and if it does it as well as it looks.

The serum also contains ingredients like Marjoram that helps activate gene expression functions, which help ageing skin. We will also find Acmella Oleacera, a natural alternative to Botox that relaxes muscle tension and helps to smooth the appearance of fine lines. The best way to use the serum is to apply soft strokes and pat them into the skin after a regular double-cleanse and toning session. Massaging the face can add a bit of stimulation, and those thousands of suspended golden bubbles release the Immortelle oil extract and help to smoothen it and increase collagen synthesis.

Immortelle Reset Serum

The name itself reveals its functions, resetting the skin for the day while working on it through the night, is by far the biggest reason why the serum is popular. Let’s be honest no one wants elaborate skincare regimes anymore; they want a magic elixir that does the work through the night. And for lazy girls like me, overnight serums and masks are an added plus. Apply and wake up to good skin – what’s not to love. The serum promises to reset your skin and remove signs of stress and fatigue from your skin while making sure it hydrates, plumps and leaves you with glowing skin.

From the word go, it was a beautiful serum to work under your moisturisers and other actives. The beautiful glass bottle packaging was a winner at first glance. It comes with a stained glass in sunset hues that looks stunning on my side table. But that’s not the reason I love it. The benefits work towards giving my skin the nourishment it needed. The serum in its texture is as weightless as they come – it’s not too thick, not too watery – just right with specks of yellow. These tiny drops are bubbles of encapsulated Immortelle essential oil. Each bottle contains 3,000 of them, and they are known for their anti-ageing powers.

Immortelle Reset Serum

The gel consistency sinks into the skin, and you can see the benefits overnight; my skin felt soft, plumped up and hydrated. And the serum has changed the texture of my skin in a way – I had rough skin with bumps and enlarged pores, and the serum made my skin even and gave it that smoothness. And that just was just the short term benefits. The long terms additions are youthful, noticeably rested with less visible fine lines.

It was when I started using the Immortelle Reset Serum that I realised how much I loved a good night’s skincare regime. That was the beginning of a structured regime for me because Reset serum created that routine for me. And I’m also extremely partial to overnight serums because the repairing and regenerating functions at night help give your skin a new day, every day. What really stands out in the serum for me? The oil-in-serum formula that’s not just unique but easy to use. It’s not greasy, period. I sometimes end up using the jade roller on it when I’m feeling indulgent and that’s soothing, after a long day.

Immortelle Reset Serum

The fragrance is light, it’s not overpowering, and it’s gentle on the skin – and if you have sensitive skin, it’s perfect for you. The biggest draw perhaps is the fact that it replenishes moisture in the skin – always an advantage for women with mature skin that is in desperate need of hydration.

What makes the Immortelle Oil Extract a force to reckon with when it comes to the skin? It contains two times the antioxidants that you find in vitamin E. And the marjoram extract protects the skin from UV damage, pollution, and stress. Do not expect to tackle bigger skin issues like hyperpigmentation with a serum like this – it’s more fitted for anti-ageing and dehydrated skin. The oil in serum formulation suits most skin types, so you can never go wrong.

In this lockdown, creating a good nighttime regime is imperative, and the L’Occitane Immortelle Reset Serum is effortless and light enough to slide into your skincare without too many hassles or breakouts. And for those who like to keep their skincare minimum, this serum is perfect because it addresses most mature skin issues in one go.

The 30ml bottle is priced at Rs 4,700 and L’Occitane just launched its own India Instagram handle.

Cup of Reviews: L’OCCITANE EN PROVENCE – Immortelle Reset (Overnight Reset Oil-in-Serum)

My BF’s brother and sister in law got me for NYE an advent calendar from L’Occitane (Best Gift EVER). I got so many great products in that calendar, which I’m still enjoying. They were mainly body care products and some skincare products.

But that’s not the star of today’s post! With that advent calendar, I got some samples. And for me L’Occitane is somewhat a brand I knew, but never got into (you know, there are so many products on the market). I never expected to make the following discovery: the Overnight Reset Oil-in-Serum (recently features in my Skincare Routine)! After using that sample, I just had to get my hands on the full size!

The Packaging

This product comes in a luxurious glass bottle. You get 30ml for 59€ (196.7€/100ml), which is more expensive than the iconic EstĂ©e Lauder Advanced night repair 84.99€/75ml (113.32€/100ml) and is about the same price tag as Dior’s Skin Boosting Super Serum. But to be honest, I’ve never tried the Dior one. The EstĂ©e Lauder serum, I’ve tried a sample for a couple of weeks, so I can’t properly judge.

What are its claims?

According to the website (buckle up, cause it’s a long one):

Your skin is visibly restored in 1 night. 100% of the women have seen the difference. If you have an intense and stressful lifestyle, this product would help restore your skin overnight, giving you instant results the next day.

The skin would visibly look younger each day, you’d look well rested, have less visible wrinkles. Each morning you’d have radiant “new” skin.

The benefits: prevents signs of ageing (wrinkles are smoothed out), radiance (you look well rested, refreshed and healthy), hydrates.

Innovation: The oil-in-serum melts nicely into the skin and is enriched with essential Immortelle oil (anti ageing, encapsuled in fine gold pearls) and marjory extract and Acmella Oleracea, which activates the regeneration mechanism and helps smooth out the skin immediately.

And the claims go further :)… After 7 nights:

  • 90% of the skin looks more even
  • 97% of the skin looks more revitalized
  • 90% of the skin will look younger

This was tested with 31 women over 1 night. 97% thought they looked more well rested and fresh, 81% had radiant skin. They also tested this after 7 days and 28 days.

Boy, they are quite specific with their numbers. If all of this is true, I think it’s quite impressive. The lady at the store (she was so helpful and knew so much info) told me that this immortelle serum is derived from Everlasting flowers. These do not whither, even after you’ve plucked it. She told me that if you rub Everlasting flower (Helichrysum italicum) on bruises, the bruise would disappear. It’s also called the curry plant :D, which sounds a lot less sexy to be honest…

The Smell

It smells like fresh vine leaves, not sweet at all. It could also be a smell of leaves when it has rained. The scent is quite strong.

The Texture

The texture is very much like a normal serum. It’s quite watery to apply, but very refreshing. It absorbs quite fast into the skin. The beads come out crushed, but they melt into the skin once you massage it in.

Why do I love it this much?!

Usually, when it comes to skincare, it takes minimum 2-3 weeks or even more than a month before you see any results at all. Often, these changes are subtle. For some products, you don’t even see a real difference.

Now, my skin has been really nice lately, as I’ve changed my skincare routine. I know what my products do to give me the skin I am fairly happy with. But then one weekend, I decided to try this serum before I went to bed. The next morning, I literally looked rejuvenated (plus I had a cold, so I was extra surprised), my skin looked radiant, glowy but not oily and plump. I really looked younger. I’ve never seen this much difference within 1 night!

After several weeks, I notice that skin still looks beautiful, however the most visible effect was after that first night. I guess I got used to seeing my skin this pretty ;D)).

My Conclusion

This product is definitely expensive. But I think the price is worth for what you get. I’m all about affordable skincare. And I’ve used high end products in the past. Some worked and some didn’t show any difference. So I’m quite critical when it comes to reviewing skincare products. But I have to say, I’m impressed. I think this makes an ideal gift for your mom, friend, sister. Not sponsored, but a huge fan!

One more thing: the water used in cosmetics is purified and deionized (it means that almost all of the mineral ions inside it is removed). Like this, the products can stay more stable over time.

Good old water, aka H2O. The most common skincare ingredient of all. You can usually find it right in the very first spot of the ingredient list, meaning it’s the biggest thing out of all the stuff that makes up the product.

It’s mainly a solvent for ingredients that do not like to dissolve in oils but rather in water.

Once inside the skin, it hydrates, but not from the outside – putting pure water on the skin (hello long baths!) is drying.

Propanediol is a natural alternative for the often used and often bad-mouthed propylene glycol. It's produced sustainably from corn sugar and it's Ecocert approved.

It's quite a multi-tasker: can be used to improve skin moisturization, as a solvent, to boost preservative efficacy or to influence the sensory properties of the end formula.

  • A natural moisturizer that’s also in our skin
  • A super common, safe, effective and cheap molecule used for more than 50 years
  • Not only a simple moisturizer but knows much more: keeps the skin lipids between our skin cells in a healthy (liquid crystal) state, protects against irritation, helps to restore barrier
  • Effective from as low as 3% with even more benefits at higher concentrations up to 20-40% (around 10% is a good usability-effectiveness sweet spot)
  • High-glycerin moisturizers are awesome for treating severely dry skin

An emollient ester with a rich and creamy but non-greasy skin feel. It makes skin supple and protects dry skin.

Butylene glycol, or let’s just call it BG, is a multi-tasking colorless, syrupy liquid. It’s a great pick for creating a nice feeling product.

BG’s main job is usually to be a solvent for the other ingredients. Other tasks include helping the product to absorb faster and deeper into the skin (penetration enhancer), making the product spread nicely over the skin (slip agent), and attracting water (humectant) into the skin.

Expand to read more

It’s an ingredient whose safety hasn’t been questioned so far by anyone (at least not that we know about). BG is approved by Ecocert and is also used enthusiastically in natural products. BTW, it’s also a food additive.

A multi-functional, silky feeling helper ingredient that can do quite many things. It's used as an emulsion stabilizer, solvent and a broad spectrum antimicrobial. According to manufacturer info, it's also a moisturizer and helps to make the product feel great on the skin. It works synergistically with preservatives and helps to improve water-resistance of sunscreens.

The emollient plant oil coming from the seeds of the white flowering plant called meadowfoam. Meadowfoam Oil has a unique fatty acid composition with 95% of it being long chain fatty acids (eicosenoic acid C20:1 – 61%, docosenoic acid C22:1 – 16% and docosadienoic acid C22:2 – 18%) that make the oil extraordinarily stable. It also contains antioxidant components such as vitamin E as well as phytosterols.

Apart from Meadowfoam Oil's crazy stability, the oil is described as non-greasy, rapidly absorbed and having a similar skin feel to more often used jojoba oil. The oil is ideal for products where a soft, smooth, silky feel is required whether it be on skin or hair.

Sunflower does not need a big intro as you probably use it in the kitchen as cooking oil, or you munch on the seeds as a healthy snack or you adore its big, beautiful yellow flower during the summer – or you do all of these and probably even more. And by even more we mean putting it all over your face as sunflower oil is one of the most commonly used plant oils in skincare.

It’s a real oldie: expressed directly from the seeds, the oil is used not for hundreds but thousands of years. According to The National Sunflower Association, there is evidence that both the plant and its oil were used by American Indians in the area of Arizona and New Mexico about 3000 BC. Do the math: it's more than 5000 years – definitely an oldie.

Expand to read more

Our intro did get pretty big after all (sorry for that), so let's get to the point finally: sunflower oil – similar to other plant oils – is a great emollient that makes the skin smooth and nice and helps to keep it hydrated. It also protects the surface of the skin and enhances the damaged or irritated skin barrier. Leslie Bauman notes in Cosmetic Dermatology that one application of sunflower oil significantly speeds up the recovery of the skin barrier within an hour and sustains the results 5 hours after using it.

It's also loaded with fatty acids (mostly linoleic (50-74%) and oleic (14-35%)). The unrefined version (be sure to use that on your skin!) is especially high in linoleic acid that is great even for acne-prone skin. Its comedogen index is 0, meaning that it's pretty much an all skin-type oil.

Truth be told, there are many great plant oils and sunflower oil is definitely one of them.

Adenosine is an important little compound in our body that has a vital cell-signalling role. Research on smearing it on our face is also promising and shows so far a couple of things:

  • It can help with wound healing
  • It’s a good anti-inflammatory agent
  • It might even help with skin’s own collagen production and improve skin firmness and elasticity
  • It helps with barrier repair and protection
  • It might be even useful for the hair helping with hair thickness and hair growth

It’s pretty much the current IT-preservative. It’s safe and gentle, but even more importantly, it’s not a feared-by-everyone-mostly-without-scientific-reason paraben.

It’s not something new: it was introduced around 1950 and today it can be used up to 1% worldwide. It can be found in nature – in green tea – but the version used in cosmetics is synthetic.

Expand to read more

Other than having a good safety profile and being quite gentle to the skin it has some other advantages too. It can be used in many types of formulations as it has great thermal stability (can be heated up to 85°C) and works on a wide range of pH levels (ph 3-10).

It’s often used together with ethylhexylglycerin as it nicely improves the preservative activity of phenoxyethanol.

A big molecule created from repeated subunits (a polymer of acrylic acid) that magically converts a liquid into a nice gel formula. It usually has to be neutralized with a base (such as sodium hydroxide) for the thickening to occur and it creates viscous, clear gels that also feel nice and non-tacky on the skin. No wonder, it is a very popular and common ingredient. Typically used at 1% or less in most formulations.

It's a little helper ingredient coming from corn, rice or potato starch that can help to keep skin mat (absorbent), to stabilise emulsions, and to keep the product together (binding).

The unfancy name for it is lye. It’s a solid white stuff that’s very alkaline and used in small amounts to adjust the pH of the product and make it just right.

For example, in case of AHA or BHA exfoliants, the right pH is super-duper important, and pH adjusters like sodium hydroxide are needed.

Expand to read more

BTW, lye is not something new. It was already used by ancient Egyptians to help oil and fat magically turn into something else. Can you guess what? Yes, it’s soap. It still often shows up in the ingredient list of soaps and other cleansers.

Sodium hydroxide in itself is a potent skin irritant, but once it's reacted (as it is usually in skin care products, like exfoliants) it is totally harmless.

A fatty acid that can be found naturally in the skin. In fact, it's the most common saturated fatty acid found in animals and plants.

As for skincare, it can make the skin feel nice and smooth in moisturizers (emollient) or it can act as a foam building cleansing agent in cleansers. It's also a very popular ingredient in shaving foams.

Super common little helper ingredient that helps products to remain nice and stable for a longer time. It does so by neutralizing the metal ions in the formula (that usually get into there from water) that would otherwise cause some not so nice changes.

It is typically used in tiny amounts, around 0.1% or less.

A cellulose (the big molecule found in the cell wall of green plants) derivative that is used as an emulsion stabilizer and thickener.

A modified dimethicone-type silicone molecule that also contains amino-groups. Having amino-groups means that Amodimethicone also has Nitrogen in its molecule that likes to have a positive charge. Positively charged (or quaternised) molecules are substantive to skin and hair as those are negatively charged surfaces and are excellent film formers. Amodiemthcone is no exception and it is especially recommended for hair-care products for its long-lasting hair conditioning benefits.

  • Primary fat-soluble antioxidant in our skin
  • Significant photoprotection against UVB rays
  • Vit C + Vit E work in synergy and provide great photoprotection
  • Has emollient properties
  • Easy to formulate, stable and relatively inexpensive

Exactly what it sounds: nice smelling stuff put into cosmetic products so that the end product also smells nice. Fragrance in the US and parfum in the EU is a generic term on the ingredient list that is made up of 30 to 50 chemicals on average (but it can have as much as 200 components!).

If you are someone who likes to know what you put on your face then fragrance is not your best friend – there's no way to know what’s really in it.

Expand to read more

Also, if your skin is sensitive, fragrance is again not your best friend. It’s the number one cause of contact allergy to cosmetics. It’s definitely a smart thing to avoid with sensitive skin (and fragrance of any type – natural is just as allergic as synthetic, if not worse!).

During the harsh winter months, I used highly reactive ingredients such as retinol to treat my skin, however, for the spring and summer seasons, I prefer lighter, less reactive and more natural products – a required break from heavier skin care routines, to allow my skin to relax.

Beauty Product Review of L’Occitane Immortelle Reset Night Serum

L’Occitane en Provence is a luxury and naturally sourced beauty product company whose products I adore for it’s sheer opulence and innovative research to accompany the use of natural ingredients.

During the harsh winter months, I used highly reactive ingredients such as retinol to treat my skin, however, for the spring and summer seasons, I prefer lighter, less reactive and more natural products – a required break from heavier skin care routines, to allow my skin to relax.

Personally, L’Occitane is a trusted brand, and Rubybox South Africa suggested I try out the L’Occitane new Immortelle Reset Night Serum where science and nature compliment the botanical elements of this serum.

Cons:

Personally, I found that over two to three days my skin needed to adjust to the serum as I woke up with an oily skin and visible pores – but this subsided after three days. I suppose this was the “detox” approach the serum adapts for your skin.

Would I use it again?

Simply put – Yes!
I loved how my skin looked and felt after just seven days.
It also was an inviting break from the chemically scented, heavy creams I’ve been using during winter – this provides a luxuriating relief with a glowing skin I love.
Additionally, my skin’s glow reminds me of the glow I had when I was in my earlier twenties!

I’m looking forward to seeing the results of this serum after 28 days.
