Parabens are a large group of preservatives which are used to prevent bacteria growing in cosmetic formulations. There has been some healthy controversy surrounding them due to a few studies finding paraben presence in breast tumours and breast tissue. However, the majority of the scientific community have deemed these findings non-conclusive due to the limitations of these studies. There’s still a lot of support for avoiding parabens following the better safe than sorry route. If you do we completely support you! If you are concerned about the health safety of parabens, then feel free to avoid them by looking out for the Paraben-Free icon. If not, don’t worry about it – they do have had one of the longest safety records as preservatives!

Most people will find no issues with sulfate, however if you find your skin doesn’t like sulfates then free feel to avoid them by looking out for the sulfate-free icon on Skincarisma.

Understanding Simple Alcohols

Alcohol ingredients are widely used in cosmetics and come in different types. For the most part alcohols are not problematic at all. However one type of alcohols, simple alcohols can be quite drying to the skin because it evaporates very quickly. This can cause irritation which can also lead to other skin complications. These alcohols should never be used alone on your skin, but combined with other cosmetic ingredients, they are normally without issue. However, for some people with sensitive and easily irritable skin, avoiding products with these simple alcohols may be beneficial. If you find your skin doesn’t like these simple alcohols, then free feel to avoid them by looking out for the Alcohol-Free icon.

Which Ingredients are classified as Alcohol?

A product will be alcohol-free if it does not contain any of the following alcohol ingredients:

Silicone-Free

Botanics Triple Age Renewal Night Cream contains a SkinCarisma flagged Silicone

Understanding Silicones

If you’ve ever used a skincare, makeup or beauty product that’s made your skin look and feel smoother tempoarily – it’s likely contained Silicone. They are a popular class of ingredients found in cosmetics due to their smooth, soft, easy-to-spread and smooth properties that help creates an artificial layer/barrier on top of skin or hair (commonly found in conditioners).

For the same reasons they are popularly used, they are also commonly avoided. Anecdotally, many individuals have reported that Silicones cause/excerbate breakouts, irritation, cause a feeling of skin being unable to breathe, cause clumping of cosmetic products and find it difficult to wash off. As a result, those who find them problematic are avoiding them and increasingly, cosmetic companies are avoiding them as well.

If you have had bad experiences with Silicones in the past, or suspect they are problematic then look out for the tick on the Silicone-free label.

Disclaimer

The Silicone-free label only includes the most common Silicone ingredients that have indentified been reported by individuals that could potentially cause issues.

These include: Amodimethicone, Behenoxy Dimethicone, Bis-Aminopropyl Dimethicone, Cetearyl Methicone, Cetyl Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Dimethicone Copolyol, Dimethiconol, Methicone, Phenyl Trimethicone, Phenyl Trimethicone, Stearoxy Dimethicone, Stearyl Dimethicone, Trimethylsilylamodimethicone.

Note, that this does not include all ingredients part of the Silicone class of ingredients.

EU Allergen-Free

Understanding the Identified Contact Allergens

The EU’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has identified and established 26 cosmetic ingredients that are likely contact allergens (potential to cause skin allergies) as demonstrated in clinical or epidemiological studies. The EU’s SCCS have recommend cosmetic companies to disclose them on the labels if used and in cases where the concentration exceeds 0.001% in leave-on products and 0.01% in rinse-off products, then they must be labelled.

Look out for the tick on the EU-Allergen free label to know your cosmetic is free from any of the 26 identified cosmetic ingredients.

For more information regarding the EU’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety, please visit their official website.

Disclaimer

The EU Allergen Free label is for the 26 ingredients identified by the EU SCCS and products will be only flagged if a suspected ingredient is on it’s ingredient list. It is possible for cosmetics to contain one of the suspect ingredients without it appearing on the ingredient list due to it not reaching the concentration threshold to disclose it and cosmetic manufacturers choice to not disclose it.

Also note, the EU Allergen Free label is not personalized for your own allergies you may have and it does not constitute as medical advice. For your specific case, always consult your medical professiona such as dermatologist, physician, pharmacist, or health care provider – please read our medical disclaimer for more information.

Fungal Acne (Malassezia) Safe

Botanics Triple Age Renewal Night Cream contains a SkinCarisma flagged potentially Fungal-Acne feeding Ingredient

Understanding Fungal Acne (Pityrosporum Folliculitis/Malassezia Folliculitis)

Pityrosporum Folliculitis/Malassezia folliculitis or simply known as Fungal Acne is a persistent acne-like condition that commonly responds poorly to traditional acne-treating methods. Unlike most cases of Acne where bacteria is the culprit, Fungi is the culprit of Fungal Acne (Hence the name!). There are certain classes & groups of ingredients that have been shown to promote and feed the growth of the Fungal Acne, Fungi such as fatty acids, oils, esters, polysorbates and fermented ingredients.

For more information regarding Fungal Acne, please visit Simple Skincare Science (f.c) – #3 of our Recommend Skincare Resources for an amazing comprehensive guide!

Please Read: How to use the Fungal Acne (Malassezia) Label

At SkinCarisma, we’ve done our best to identify as many ingredients as possible but note the fungal-free label may not be 100% accurate due to the complexconditions and combination of ingredients that malezzeria can thrive on.

Additionally, products that may contain ingredients that have shown to feed Malassezia may not neccessarily exacerbate the condition due to concentration of ingredient used in the product, this information is simply not available on the products.

As a result, please note this is only an experimental label that can be best used to possible identify problematic products you have used in the past. It is in no way a perfect identifier nor a predictor in whether or not it will exacerbate or cause fungal acne. It will continue to be worked on as more information and research comes to light.

If you find any ingredients you believe should be included, please email us at [email protected].

Disclaimer

Due to the lack of substantial research into this area it is very likely there are other ingredients and class/groups of ingredients that could feed Fungal Acne which have not been indentified.

The Fungal-Safe label does not constitute as medical advice. For your specific case, always consult your medical professiona such as dermatologist, physician, pharmacist, or health care provider – please read our medical disclaimer for more information.

Good moisturiser – The cream looks ‘heavy’, but it’s actually light and gentle. I found it moisturised my skin pretty well. It definitely gave a cool matt finish and kept my skin hydrated throughout the day. I have normal to combination skin and it was very easy to apply. It wasn’t too dry or oily. I tend to get dry skin around my mouth area and this cream certainly helped to hydrate and remove the dryness. Also those with sensitive skin will really find this moisturiser effective, it won’t cause a bad reaction.

Botanics Triple Age Renewal Firming Day Cream SPF15 Review

The Botanics range of products by Boots is pretty amazing. It covers everything from organic, brightening, early age, hydrating to mature skincare products. For this purpose, we will look at and review the Botanics Triple Age Renewal Firming Day Cream. After reading some positive reviews on this product I decided to try it for myself. An added bonus is that the cream comes with spf. This means you won’t have to buy an additional sunscreen (obviously if you are out in the sun for long duration, you will need something stronger than sfp15).

Product Description:

The product comes in 50ml in a small white tub. The packaging is very simple and has a ‘clean’ feel to it. Would be an ideal gift idea. The retail price is £10.59 at the time of writing this review.

The cream claims to have anti-ageing benefits. “It helps to nourish the skin and is infused with purple orchid extracts. These help to plump and hydrate the skin while smoothing fine lines and wrinkles“.

It is meant to have “superior UVA/UVB protection and contains vitamins A, C and E. These work to maintain and restore skin elasticity and give smoother, younger looking skin”.

Ingredients – Aqua (Water), C12-15 alkyl benzoate, Glycerin, Octocrylene, Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, Dimethicone, Ethylhexyl salicylate, Prunus amygdalus dulcis (Sweet almond) oil, Cetearyl glucoside, Tribehenin, Sodium polyacrylate, Butyrospermum parkii (Shea) butter, Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, Astrocaryum murumuru butter, Potassium cetyl phosphate, Cetearyl alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Dimethicone crosspolymer, Caprylyl glycol, Ascorbyl glucoside, Xanthan gum, Citric acid, Parfum (Fragrance), Tocopheryl acetate, Sodium benzoate, Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, Retinyl palmitate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Orchis mascula extract, Tetrasodium EDTA, Dipropylene glycol, Simethicone, Glycine soja (Soybean) protein, Citronellol, Tocopherol.

A lot of ingredients! Generally I’m not a fan of products having so many. However, the moisturiser does have sweet almond oil, shea butter, citric acid and soy bean. I know these are good for the skin.

Texture – I would describe this as a medium to thick spread. In my view, if your skin is a little dry, you may need to go over a few times before it sits and penetrates into the skin. However, if you have normal or combination skin, then it really glides over the surface very nicely and you can instantly feel it. The colour is a creamy white.

Smell – The cream has a very mild and pleasant smell. I would describe it as a light, organic, ‘planty smell’. It is the presence of purple orchards in my view that gives off this fragrance. The smell is not overpowering, but just enough to linger on and is noticeable to others if they are in close proximity.

My Verdict

I have used the cream now for over 6 weeks. I normally apply in the morning after using a cleanser.

Good base – If you’re looking for a cream that you can use under your make-up, then this is really good. It doesn’t make the skin oily and layers well under foundation. It doesn’t interfere or give that ‘cakey’ look that some of the heavier creams tend to do.

SP15 – Buying a moisturising cream with sfp is certainly an added bonus. You’re actually getting two things for the price of one. One of the major contributors of premature ageing is constant exposure to the sun. This ruins the skin as the ultraviolet rays damage the fibres and make skin appear saggy and wrinkly. The Botanics Triple Age Renewal Firming Day Cream has spf. This means not only does it moisturise the skin but it also gives it protection.

There are a few downsides to the product though.

Wrinkles – The product is promoted as an anti ageing cream. The claim is ‘it will reduce the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles in 4 weeks’. I’m afraid I haven’t noticed this. I’ve been applying the cream for 6 weeks and there isn’t anything noticeable when it comes to this. If you do buy this product, do not expect it to be a miracle cure for your wrinkles. It’s not going to happen.

Radiance – I expected the cream to at least brighten my skin. However, it didn’t do this. Nor did it make my complexion radiant. With some creams I have used, it did give a youthful glow. Not here I’m afraid.

Price – I did mention above the fact it helps to moisturise the skin and has spf. However, at £10.49 for 50ml I think it is a bit pricey. If it had anti ageing benefits I could’ve justified the price tag. However, without seeing results, it’s a thumbs down in the price department.

In terms of how long does the Botanics Triple Age Renewal Firming Day Cream last? I bought the cream from my local Boots store about 3 months ago. Though I do not apply every day, I do use it frequently and so far a third is still left.

  • It may not work as claimed for some users.
  • The retinol in the product may cause photosensitivity.
  • It may not offer free trials for possible buyers.

The manufacturer warns that you should avoid contact with your eyes. If the cream gets into the eyes, rinse thoroughly with water. Although it offers some protection from the sunlight, this product is not designed for sunbathing.

Since there is retinyl palmitate in the ingredient list, it is best to wear sunscreen if you are using this product because any form of retinol makes the skin more sensitive to sun exposure.

It is a reasonably priced product. You may buy it from the boots website, as well as from online shopping websites like Amazon.

You may return this item free of charge within several days of purchase for a refund or replacement.

Lightly massage the product into your skin, preferably at night time. This cream is recommended for combination, dry, normal, and mature skin types.

There are no side effects mentioned on the product. However, since the formula has retinyl palmitate, it may make your skin more sensitive to sun damage.

I’ve tried other products from the Botanics range and have never been overly impressed with them, so I approached this with the attitude of giving it a try, but not expecting a lot. But much to my surprise, this is actually performing well so far! I’ve been using it for about three weeks, every morning and evening, and I think I’ve definitely seen an improvement in the dark circles under my eyes. I’m not so sure about deep lines or wrinkles, as I don’t have any, but the fine lines around the edges of my eyes don’t seem so noticeable either.

This is more of a cream than a serum, but it applies really nicely and doesn’t take too long to sink in either, which is always a bonus in the mornings when you’re getting ready to go to work and/or put your make up on for the day. It doesn’t really have a scent to it, which is a bonus for someone like me who’s skin doesn’t do well with heavily scented products, and a little goes a long way so I can see the 15ml tube lasting me at least another three weeks, if not longer.

I would say the only slight downside with this eye serum is the packaging. The tube is opaque so it’s difficult to tell how much product you have left, and it’s made of quite a rigid plastic making it difficult to dispense the product in the small amount you need for the under eye area. I’ve had a few occasions with this where I’ve squeezed out too much, resulting in wastage. Overall though this is a nice eye serum that I would repurchase.

I have been testing this for the past 2 weeks on my dehydrated and allergy-prone skin. I have fine lines due to dehydration and allergy related puffiness under and around my eyes.
This serum is more like a cream, and goes on beautifully – smooths out lines and gives an immediate gentle lift to the area. Also a good base for makeup and I have had no allergic reactions or irritation from using it.
I will keep testing it to see if it gives more long-term results in term of fine lines and hydration and will update my review.
