BIOS Flash & Aorus Tool
In this review, we’re using the current BIOS, version F4, which is based on Nvidia’s v.86.02.39.00.9 E build. It’s a lot more stable than what came before. Thus, we recommend updating to the newest version.
One of the changes Gigabyte implemented was reducing the default mode’s power target to 250W, while maintaining the same clock rates. The lower target proved sufficient; additional headroom wasn’t needed to sustain its desired frequencies. Overclockers still have access to targets as high as 375W via software, though.
If you’re going to update, we suggest using Gigabyte’s “VGA@BIOS Utility” for flashing the BIOS. Bear in mind the process gets a little tricky due to the card’s dual-BIOS implementation, imposed by the aforementioned video switches. If you want to flash the first (AH) BIOS, you need to use the HDMI2 port. Flashing the second (AD) BIOS necessitates switching to the DVI-D output. Both files are included in the download from Gigabyte’s site.
At least for now, we strongly discourage using the special OC mode in Aorus’ tool. Instead, overclock through third-party apps like MSI’s Afterburner utility.
A GPU-Z screenshot provides the most pertinent technical information, even if the GPU Boost values we observed were much higher than Gigabyte’s official specifications.

If you’re looking for more bass response and overall power out of a portable Bluetooth speaker, you’ve probably figured out that you’ll need to spend more money and accept that “portable” might not necessarily mean “small.” The JBL Xtreme, at $299.95, is not cheap or petite, but it’s probably the most powerful, truly portable speaker we’ve tested in a while, and bass lovers will not be disappointed. Throw in speakerphone functionality and a splash-proof design, and the Xtreme has plenty going for it. There’s also plenty of digital signal processing, which helps prevent any distortion at high volumes, but might throw off some purists. Most listeners, however, will be impressed by the Xtreme’s audio performance.
Design
The cylindrical Xtreme is an aptly named speaker—it looks kind of like a torpedo, with dimensions of 4.9 by 11.1 by 4.8 inches (HWD) and a substantial weight of 4.7 pounds. Yes, this is a portable speaker, but it is heavy, and the strap that fastens to loops on either side of the top is comically thick—it’s basically a mini guitar strap—but necessary. The Xtreme is also good-looking—the woven speaker grille looks like a cross between cloth and metal and comes in black, blue, or red. Beneath the grille, dual 63mm woofers and 35mm tweeters deliver the audio.

The Xtreme’s hefty frame is kept from rolling and scooting around by rubber feet at its base, and just above the base, on the back end of the speaker, there are connections for the included power adapter, two USB ports (for charging mobile devices), and a 3.5mm aux input (but no audio cable is included). The most interesting thing about this compartment is how JBL chose to protect it—a zipper covers the ports when not in use.

Pairing the Xtreme is a simple process; The system can pair with up to three devices simultaneously, and will automatically re-pair upon powering up. JBL rates the battery life at roughly 15 hours, but your results will depend on the volume levels you choose to play your music at—and this speaker can get very, very loud. The speaker will shut down after 30 minutes of not being used, or go into standby mode if it’s connected to a power source.
Performance and Conclusions
On tracks with powerful sub-bass content, like The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” the Xtreme delivers, well, extreme bass response. This is probably the most intense bass we’ve heard from a portable Bluetooth speaker, other than the very large Soundcast Melody ( at Amazon Canada) , which is portable more in theory than in practice. Yet the Xtreme keeps things in check—there’s no distortion at top volumes, and the bass doesn’t overpower the other frequency ranges. At moderate levels, the bass sounds more powerful than at absolute maximum volume, probably due to some digital signal processing—but the DSP works, as the speaker never distorts.
On Bill Callahan’s “Drover,” his baritone vocals sound incredibly rich and deep through the Xtreme, but there’s also plenty of high-mid treble edge to keep things crisp and clear. The drums on this track get a substantial bass presence without veering into unnatural territory, which is often what happens on bass-heavy speaker systems. Here, the bass response sounds vibrant, with depth and dimension—the electric bass part stands out, which isn’t always the case on this track.
The kick drum loop’s attack on Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild” gets enough high-mid presence to maintain its sharp punchiness, but we really hear its presence in the lows and low-mids, which round out its sustain. The sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the drum loop are delivered with plenty of thunder—it’s not quite like there’s a subwoofer hiding somewhere, but it’s close. The DSP, however, means that at higher volumes, the deeper bass parts sound a little more tame, and in some cases, seem to tamp down the dynamics a bit. Most music lovers will appreciate the balance of lows, mids, and highs the Xtreme outputs, but audiophiles might not love the sculpting of the DSP.
On orchestral tracks, like the opening scene in John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary, the Xtreme delivers the higher register strings, brass, and vocals with clarity and brightness—they are the focus of attention in the mix. That said, the lower register instrumentation gets quite a boost in the lows and low-mids—purists will probably not love the way orchestral tracks sound through the Xtreme, but there’s no denying that it adds some excitement to the proceedings, even if that added bass response means things are a bit less accurate.
One quirky performance note: When navigating to a new track, the Xtreme will often play the first half second or so at a very low volume, then bump it up to whatever volume you have the speaker set to. This likely has to do with the DSP calibrating itself for each new track, but it can be a tad annoying.
In the $300-and-up portable Bluetooth speaker category, it’s been an interesting year—both the Marshall Kilburn ( at Amazon Canada) and the much more expensive Bang & Olufsen Beolit 15 ( at Amazon Canada) recently received Editors’ Choice awards, and are the top speakers you can get right now. If you’re looking to spend less money, the Bose SoundLink Mini II ( at Amazon Canada) offers quality portable Bluetooth audio for far less money than the above-mentioned options, but its output is not quite as powerful, as you might imagine.
At $299.95, the JBL Xtreme lives up to its name—for a portable speaker, it’s extremely loud, large, and pricey. In some ways, you can make the case that it’s a better portable speaker than any other options named above: it’s splash-proof and it offers a speakerphone function (the Marshall and the B&O speakers do not). The DSP throws us off just enough that it doesn’t get our Editors’ Choice—there’s a lot sculpting happening at higher volumes—but make no mistake, this is an excellent portable Bluetooth speaker, and for plenty of readers, it’s a great option.
