REVIEW: The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution

I switched from using the Pixi Glow Tonic for acid toning to The ordinary Glycolic Acid Toning solution a little less than a year ago, just before the winters started. Before I jump into the review, let me put it out there for any newbie reading this: I started using the Pixi Glow Tonic as my stepping stone for my acid toning routine. Whatever is my experience with this product might not be for you especially if you are just starting into acid toning or even if you are a pro and use multiple acids and retinols in your routine. Now that we have that out of the way, lets start with the review.

What is it and what does it claim to do:

Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution is a water-based toner with glycolic acid and botanical extracts. This treatment gently exfoliates the skin to restore a clear, radiant appearance. It improves the look of uneven tone and texture with regular use.

Ingredients:

Aqua (Water), Glycolic Acid, Rosa Damascena Flower Water, Centaurea Cyanus Flower Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water, Propanediol, Glycerin, Triethanolamine, Aminomethyl Propanol, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Tasmannia Lanceolata Fruit/Leaf Extract, Aspartic Acid, Alanine, Glycine, Serine, Valine, Isoleucine, Proline, Threonine, Histidine, Phenylalanine, Glutamic Acid, Arginine, PCA, Sodium PCA, Sodium Lactate, Fructose, Glucose, Sucrose, Urea, Hexyl Nicotinate, Dextrin, Citric Acid, Polysorbate 20, Gellan Gum, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Sodium Chloride, Hexylene Glycol, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol.

Key Ingredients breakdown:

  • Glycolic acid:an alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates the surface of the skin.
  • Tasmanian Pepperberry:a botanical extract that reduces the irritation associated with acid use.
  • Aloe Vera and ginseng: botanical extracts with soothing and radiance-boosting benefits.
  • Amino Acids (namely Aspartic acid, Alanine, Glycine, Serine, Valine, Isoleucine, Proline, Threonine, Histidine, Phenylalanine, Glutamic Acid and Arginine):every amino acid has a different effect but to summarize: all of them together in this formula provide hydration, have healing properties and help improve the appearance of wrinkles by restoring collagen synthesis in the skin.

Packaging:

Combined with the sleek design that is The Ordinary’s signature, the toner comes in a bottle with a twist up cap that makes dispensing the toner on the cotton pad so much easier. Absolutely love the design because this gives me a lot more control on how much toner I want on the cotton pad.

Texture and scent:

The toner itself is very watery and appears colorless on the cotton pad. I couldn’t smell any fragrance on it. On application, it sinks right into the skin and there is no tightness instead I felt it was a little hydrating.

Which Products Conflict With The Ordinary Glycolic Acid?

It is best to avoid using the following products in the same routine. They can be used in alternate routines morning/evening.

  • Peptides
  • EUK 134
  • Direct Acids

Why can’t I use The Ordinary Glycolic Acid with certain products?

By Deciem: Glycolic Acid is part of the Direct Acid family, it is not so friendly with products that contain peptides or EUK 134. ⁣ We also recommend avoiding the use of retinoids alongside direct acids if you are an inexperienced user of either.

We would not recommend combining direct acids with peptides due to the susceptibility of peptides to hydrolysis (which breaks the bonds between peptides, reducing their efficacy and making them into individual amino acids). At low pH, the peptides undergo processes such as deamidation (the removal of an amide group) and oxidation, which compromise the activity of the peptides.

Having said that, if you have previously combined peptides with acids and have not experienced any negative side effects or discoloration, you may continue to combine the two products as so as the combination does not pose any potential harm. Our recommendations are meant to serve as a preventative measure to avoid any incompatibility between those combinations and also because skin tolerance is subjective.

If you can’t tolerate glycolic acid products, consider other alpha hydroxy acids like lactic acid or mandelic acid . These AHAs have a larger molecule size. While they may not penetrate as well as glycolic acid, they are more gentle on the skin than glycolic acid and may appeal to sensitive and dry skin types.

The Benefits of Glycolic Acid

There are many reasons to incorporate a glycolic acid product into your skincare regimen. Glycolic acid has been shown to improve collagen production in the skin. Collagen gives your skin its strength and structure. While collagen production slows as you age, it can be stimulated with topical glycolic acid.

Glycolic acid also helps fade hyperpigmentation, dark spots, age spots, and sunspots by increasing skin cell turnover rate. The result is that your skin makes new cells more quickly, and the older, darker skin cells are sloughed off. It also helps with acne scars caused by post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Glycolic acid has the smallest molecule size of all AHAs, which allows it to penetrate deeper into the skin for better results. Unfortunately, this can irritate those that have sensitive skin.

How Effective Is The Ordinary Glycolic Acid Toner?

Numerous studies show that glycolic acid can be used at concentrations between 20 and 70% to improve acne scarring and reduce the appearance of acne. The glycolic acid peels should usually be washed after between 1 and 15 minutes. The Ordinary Gellic Acid Toning Solution does not contain a glycolic acid peel. Instead, it is intended to act as a toner you use at night following a wash. This toner must be applied at night and not washed away until the next day.

Indeed, the strength of glycolic acid in this toner may not be enough to actually deliver benefits for certain skin conditions.

We compared the effectiveness of lower-strength daily treatments (5% glycolic acid cream for 24 weeks) and higher-strength treatment (70% glycolic acids peel once every two weeks). The 15% concentration in The Ordinary Glycolic Acid Toning Treatment was higher than the 77%.

Glycolic acid 7% Toning Solution by The Ordinary offers gentle exfoliation to improve skin’s radiance, and visibility. The formula also improves the appearance of skin texture with continued use.

Glycolic acids 7 Toning Solution: How Much Do You Need to Use It?

Glycolic Acid 7 7% Toning Solution promotes radiance. You can gradually improve your skin’s texture by using it once a week after you have cleansed to lighten and tone.

Can You Use The Ordinary Glycolic Acid Toner Everyday?

The following directions are specific to each brand. Use PM only, once per day. Wash your face with a cleanser, pour the toner on a cotton ball and sweep across face and neck. An AHA with a pH range between 3 and 4, is considered the best. However, the average glycolic acid toner’s pH is 3.6.

But, there’s a catch. In the skincare world, more effective usually means more irritating. Start with a low concentration (this one is low) a couple of times a week and build up both dose and frequency from there.

What’s In The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution?

GLYCOLIC ACID TO EXFOLIATE SKIN

Glycolic acid is my favourite exfoliant. I like multitaskers and this one does a lot of jobs:

  • It exfoliates skin: It dissolves the glue that holds skin cells together so they can slough off.
  • It boosts collagen: In high doses, it firms skin and helps treats sun damage.
  • It hydrates skin: It draws water into it from the environment.

Awesome, right? It’s so effective because it’s the smallest member of the Alpha Hydroxy Acids family so it penetrates skin more deeply than its siblings Lactic acid & co.

But, there’s a catch. In the skincare world, more effective usually means more irritating. Start with a low concentration (this one is low) a couple of times a week and build up both dose and frequency from there.

P.S. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, you can stop reading now. Glycolic acid is awesome… for dry and sun-damaged skin. Your skin type needs Salicylic acid (it exfoliates the pores, too) and this toning solution doesn’t have it.

AMINO ACIDS TO RESTORE HYDRATION AND ELASTICITY

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, like collagen and elastin. Without them, your skin would lose all its firmness and elasticity.

Each amino acid works slightly differently. Here’s the lowdown on the most famous amino acids used in The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution:

  • Arginine: It may help wounds and skin cell damage heal faster.
  • Glycine: It helps repair damaged tissue and speeds up the healing process.
  • Histidine: It fights the free radicals that cause wrinkles and has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe skin.
  • Proline: It reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and restores collagen synthesis after UV exposure.

HEXYL NICOTINATE TO INCREASE BLOOD FLOW

It doesn’t really do much for the skin but I had to mention it because it can be irritating if you have super sensitive skin.
