Some Brain MD reviews mention that the product works by providing more mental energy and clarity. And while the effects of this product are likely to vary from person to person, the fact remains that Brain MD is a supplement that attempts to provide nutrients to the brain that it may not be getting otherwise.

How Does The Mind MD Broad Spectrum Cognitive Support Supplement Work?

On their website, the mechanism of this nootropic supplement is tied to a timeline.

Here’s how it’ll work:

First Month:

The first month is all about targeting cognitive function and memory enhancement. This supplement will optimize your mind with the help of neurotransmitter regulation to help you learn and perform better day by day.

Second Month:

After 30 days, you’ll notice an improvement in the ‘acoustic startle response’.

The acoustic startle response is a reflex action or something that the body will ‘jerk’ up to upon hearing a loud sound! It depicts the sensitivity of humans to sound.

Someone who is easily provoked or ‘startled’ upon hearing a high pitched sound is said to have a sensitive acoustic reflex – this is an indicator of anxiety and stress.

Third Month:

You would have now achieved a serene state of mind along with improved memory skills, superior learning capability, commendable cognitive

The fan-shaped leaves of the ginkgo tree are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat all kinds of ailments. In the United States, the extract from the leaves is sold as a supplement commonly called ginkgo biloba. One of its main selling points is as a memory enhancer. However, as with other brain health supplements, the science doesn’t support the claims.

Don’t buy into brain health supplements

n0919g16207259550415

A recent survey found that about 25% of adults over age 50 take a supplement to improve their brain health with the promise of enhanced memory and sharper attention and focus.

The problem? There’s no solid proof any of them work.

The main issue with all over-the-counter supplements is lack of regulation. The FDA doesn’t oversee product testing or ingredient accuracy — they just look out for supplements that make health claims related to the treatment of specific diseases.

In terms of brain health, this means a supplement manufacturer can claim a product helps with mental alertness or memory loss — but not that it protects against or improves dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. This way manufacturers don’t have to back up any claim that their product is effective.

A combination of nutrients

Many brain supplements focus on omega-3 fatty acids (such as those found in fish oil), vitamin E, various B vitamins, or various combinations. Why these?

There’s strong evidence that certain diets — like the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, and the MIND diet — can help improve cognitive function.

These diets contain foods with large amounts of these vitamins and minerals. But what is not clear is whether it’s the combination of nutrients in these diets that’s beneficial, or whether it’s specific ones or even certain amounts, or some other factors. Researchers have tried to answer these questions by testing how these individual nutrients affect cognitive health. So far the limited studies have found no evidence they help, with a few rare exceptions.

Still, this doesn’t mean that the brain supplements may not work. It’s just that there is not much, if any, evidence from randomized clinical trials — the gold standard for research — on isolated vitamins or minerals and brain health.

Here’s a summary of what science has found so far and what it means.

Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil)

There are three types of omega-3s: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) — which are found mostly in fatty fish like salmon and mackerel — and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is found in leafy green vegetables (Brussels sprouts, spinach), vegetable oils (canola, soybean), and nuts and seeds (walnuts, flaxseeds).

The body coverts ALA into EPA or DHA, but only in small amounts, so the best way to get high amounts of EPA and DHA is by eating more fish.

Omega-3s help build cell membranes in the brain and also may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that could protect brain cells.

Fish is a staple in the Mediterranean and MIND diets, among others, and studies have found an association between higher intake of fish and a lower risk of cognitive decline. However, omega-3 supplements haven’t shown the same effect. Any benefit seems to come from a greater intake of fish and not from taking fish oil supplements.

What the leaves say about ginkgo biloba

The fan-shaped leaves of the ginkgo tree are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat all kinds of ailments. In the United States, the extract from the leaves is sold as a supplement commonly called ginkgo biloba. One of its main selling points is as a memory enhancer. However, as with other brain health supplements, the science doesn’t support the claims.

One of the largest clinical trials that explored the possible link was the Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory (GEM) study. Researchers recruited more than 3,000 older adults, average age 79, 54% of whom were men, with normal cognitive function or mild cognitive impairment. Everyone was given either 120 milligrams of ginkgo or a placebo twice a day for almost six years. (This amount was chosen based on previous research.) The results found that ginkgo biloba did not lower the overall rate of developing dementia.

Thinking about supplements

So, the question remains: with no evidence, why do people still buy in to brain health supplements? A major reason, it’s easier to take a pill than to make lasting lifestyle changes. Instead, invest in doing more exercise and following a plant-based diet. These can help with memory and brain health in the long term more than any supplement.

Multiple ways to communicate with your therapist

Once you’ve signed up for your plan, your prescriber or therapist will reach out to schedule your initial consultation so you both can determine your treatment plan.

Eighty-nine percent of surveyed users reported that the speed at which they heard a response from the therapist was either very good or excellent.

From there, you will schedule all your weekly or monthly live sessions directly in your private user portal on a desktop or in the Cerebral app. This portal is where you can send messages to your providers whenever you want. This is also where your care counselor will check in with you once a month to see how you’re progressing, answer any questions you have, or work with you to resolve any issues.

Eighty-three percent of the users we surveyed thought the Cerebral platform was either very good or excellent in terms of user-friendliness, and 84% thought the video and platform quality was either very good or excellent.

If you’re not happy with your prescriber or therapist, you can request a switch when you speak with your care counselor, send a message through the contact page, or call the company’s customer service line during business hours. Depending on what method you choose, the switching process might take longer than at some of the other companies we reviewed.

Still, 86% of users we surveyed found the process easy or very easy—which is higher than the average number of users who found the switching process easy or very easy at competitor sites.

What is it?

BrainMD is a nootropic supplement that is formulated to help support healthy brain and memory performance. Their promotional materials say that it is especially effective for stimulating blood flow to the brain, which boosts cognitive function and promotes mental sharpness.

Improved cerebral blood flow can also have benefits for long-term mental health and functionality, as it can help to flush toxins and prevent the buildup of plaque. Their advertising recommends it to students that are looking to raise their grades, professionals that want to advance their careers, and senior citizens that are looking to retain or regain their mental performance levels.

The nootropic supplement that has shown the most aptitude at improving mental function in the widest variety of ways is Memotenz. BrainMD Ingredients and Side Effects

BrainMD uses a variety of amino acids, neurotransmitters, and other chemical compounds in order to accomplish its neurological effects. Some of them have long medical histories of effectiveness in products of this nature, while others are either lacking effective clinical documentation of their effectiveness or else have demonstrated some more negative effects during testing. Some of the key ingredients found in BrainMD include:

Carnitine Ginkgo Biloba
Vinpocetine Huperzine A

Carnitine: An amino acid that is used in a variety of different types of supplements and health products due to its multiple different beneficial effects on the body. It has shown to have a number of applications for increasing users’ energy levels and metabolism, which makes it popular in many weight loss products.

It also has been used in products that work to improve blood sugar and insulin levels, circulation, and heart health. It is popular in products of this nature because it has been shown to help boost alertness and mental activity by increasing the mitochondrial activity in the brain and providing neurological support.

It is not thought to have any significant potential to cause serious side effects in its users, as it occurs naturally in the body. It is one of our team of experts’ most highly recommended ingredients for nootropic products.

Ginkgo Biloba: Another highly rated nootropic according to our research team, and one of the most popular over the counter mental performance boosters in the world. Ginkgo has been cultivated for centuries for use as a health and wellness boosting herb with multiple beneficial effects.

Ginkgo biloba is Chinese in origin, however the cultivation of the giant trees has spread across the globe. Their fruits are thought to be mostly inedible and give off a powerfully unpleasant odor whenever their skins are ruptured, however ginkgo’s needle-like leaves are rich in valuable nutrients that can help stimulate blood flow, reduce stress, improve sexual function, and possibly even reduce the chances of developing cancer.

There are quite a few different mental benefits that have been attributed to ginkgo biloba over the years including:

  • Improving memory function
  • Preventing cognitive decline
  • Preventing Alzheimer’s and dementia
  • Improving cognition
  • Increasing attention span
  • Increasing processing speed and accuracy

It may also help to reduce the symptoms of conditions like schizophrenia, tardive dyskinesia, vitiligo, and pink eye. Additionally, it is used by women to help improve the symptoms of PMS and by men to help increase their erectile functioning.

Vinpocetine: A synthetic nootropic that has been designed to mimic the structure of the alkaloid vincamine, which is found naturally occurring in periwinkle plants. Due to its synthetic nature it is illegal to sell and market vinpocetine as a dietary supplement in the United States, though it is not considered a controlled substance.

Vinpocetine has shown in some trials that it may be able to help increase blood flow to the brain and may potentially also improve memory functions in older adults that had demonstrated some level of memory issues, however the results of many of these trials have been disputed. In the limited testing that has been performed, some side effects that may potentially be the result of vinpocetine consumption may include:

  • Headaches
  • Upset stomach
  • Agranulocytosis
  • Reduced immune function
  • Cellular death

There are also no studies that have measured the long-term effects of vinpocetine, so it is not known if it is safe for daily consumption for an indefinite time period. Our experts do not plan to suggest any products that use vinpocetine until there is more complete safety data for it that is available.

Huperzine A: A derivative of the plant that is commonly known as Chinese club moss. Huperzine is a hotly debated ingredient among nootropics manufacturers and critics, many of whom claim that it can be effective for improving mental performance, and many who are either not sure about its effectiveness or are worried about potential negative health consequences.

Some of these effects, such as headaches and digestive issues, did not worry our reviewers, however they did have some reservations based on potential side effects like:

  • Blurred vision and slurred speech
  • Facial twitches
  • Uncontrollable urination
  • Increased blood pressure

Huperzine A may also potentially interact with some prescription medications or preexisting medical conditions. These may include conditions like epilepsy, peptic ulcers, and certain types of lung conditions, as well as medications for conditions such as glaucoma, Alzheimer’s, and certain cholinergic conditions.

BrainMD Quality of Ingredients

The ingredients in BrainMD include some very high quality additives that our experts strongly recommend, as well as some other ingredients that they do not tend to suggest for use in products of this nature.

Both ginkgo biloba and carnitine are considered to be among the top additives for products of this nature that are available without a prescription. They are both thought to help increase blood flow to the brain and improve memory abilities, thinking skills, and a variety of other biological functions.

Both vinpocetine and huperzine A may also have some applications for increasing cerebral blood flow, but our team worries that they may possibly case side effects in some users as well. They both lack the clinical data that our team prefers in products that they recommend, and are not considered effective nootropic ingredients at this time.

The Price and Quality of BrainMD

BrainMD is available through a variety of outlets online, however its price tends to fluctuate dramatically, depending on the source that it comes from. This is the standard range of prices that our research team found for BrainMD:

  • 1, 120-count bottle (30-day supply) of BrainMD Brain and Memory Power Boost capsules: $39.95-56.95

This is a very larger range of prices and there is no information offered to explain these discrepancies. At the lower end of its price range, BrainMD is about average for supplements of this nature, in the upper range it is somewhat more expensive than average.

Conclusion – Does BrainMD Work?

Our team of experts strongly recommend both ginkgo biloba and carnitine for use in nootropic supplements. They do not, however, recommend other ingredients in BrainMD like vinpocetine and huperzine A. The overall effect of this is that users may very well experience some sort of boost, especially as related to blood flow to the brain, however they may also be at risk for developing certain types of side effects.

In general, it is easy to find products that use ginkgo and carnitine, but that do not choose to undermine their value with less reputable ingredients. As such our research team cannot recommend BrainMD to our readers.

The product that our team suggests to people that are looking for a mental performance booster is called Memotenz. It has an excellent reputation with both our review team and with their customers for providing both short term and long term mental performance benefits.

It is both a helpful study aid and a neuroprotectant that can help keep the brain from being damaged by environmental factors. Click here to read testimonials from previous Memotenz users to see if it could be helpful for you.

One Response to BrainMD Review

I took 1 supplement of Brain MD Restful Sleep 3 nights, and I am now realizing it’s this bottle (lot) that is severely hurting me. Severe headaches, blurred vision, pain in the right side of my chest, nerve twitching in my hand. I am very concerned and scared I could experience long term damage. I am drinking alot of water but ready to call 911 and go to the emergency room, that is how bad these side effects are. How can I get this bottle tested ? I went through a previous bottle with no problems. I will call Brain MD Monday, however they will only elude responsibility. Can you offer advice ?
