Editor’s tip: Don’t hesitate to customize your application. For example, if you have an oily T-zone but dry cheeks, concentrate the oil on the dry areas and avoid the oily sections.

Ahead, we’re sharing how to correctly use face oils in your skin care routine to reap the most benefits.

Understand The Order Of Application

Like with all skin care products, the order of application matters. When it comes to facial oils, they should be applied as the last step in your skin care routine at night, and right before SPF in the morning. It’s been debated whether oil should be applied before or after moisturizer 一 and while it can vary from product to product, in general, facial oil should be used on top of creams and lotions. This is because once you apply an oil it’s tricky for other products to penetrate the skin due to the oil’s high density.

How To Apply Face Oil On The Skin

Once you’ve applied moisturizer, it’s time for the oil. It’s always best to follow the directions on the product, but as a rule of thumb, apply four to five drops of oil into your palms and pat it into the skin. Smoothly press the oil onto your face and neck, using the whole surface of your hands.

Editor’s tip: Don’t hesitate to customize your application. For example, if you have an oily T-zone but dry cheeks, concentrate the oil on the dry areas and avoid the oily sections.

[Review] Budget Hyaluronic Acid Comparison – TO, TJ's, and Hada Labo

Hey everyone! I did a lot of research here on SCA as I started my skincare journey and spent a lot of time searching for a good comparison between budget HA serums, but didn't find what I was looking for. So I tried some of them myself and wanted to share what I found!

Of course, YMMV, so please add your own experiences with these products if you've tried them! For reference, I'm 23F with combo skin, VERY dehydrated, slightly sensitive and prone to mild acne. I live in the Pacific Northwest and am comparing serums during the dry season. I'm budget conscious, and these are the 3 most affordable and accessible (to me!) HA serums I found!

The Ordinary – Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

Price – $6.80 / 30ml

HA Concentration: 2%

Texture – Thick, dries matte

Pros: This is the first HA serum I ever tried, and it's still my favorite. It's the thickest texture and I can use less of it to yield even better results than either Hada Labo or TJ's. The scent is very mild and inoffensive.

Cons: It's very sticky and pills if used too heavily or if you don't wait long enough between product layers. It's the least cosmetically elegant formula of the 3, but I found it didn't matter too much to me. The dropper bottle is annoying when you get down to the last of the product, since it's thick and it's very hard to get the last bits out. I also don't like having to order it online and pay shipping or meet the order minimum. Biggest con is whatever's going on with Deciem right now – I'm not into supporting the brand on its current cringe-worthy trajectory.

Trader Joe's – Hyaluronic Moisture Boost Serum

Price – $ 8.99 / 30ml

HA Concentration: 1%

Texture – average thickness, smooth

Pros: This serum is the perfect consistency for spreading and patting into damp skin. It sinks in beautifully and feels quite plumping. I can buy it in-store while I'm getting my groceries.

Cons: While elegant, it feels less effective. It doesn't contain the B5 or extra 1% of HA that TO's does. It's a bit more expensive per ounce for a less sophisticated formulation.

Hada Labo – Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid Lotion Moist

Price – $10.00 / 170ml

HA Concentration: unknown?

Texture – Thin and watery, gives a slight dewy sheen

Pros: For the amount of product you get (and the shipping deals you find,) this is the least expensive product per ounce. It's very cosmetically elegant, fluid, and easy to layer without pilling. I find it leaves my skin with a very slight hydrated sheen after applying. It makes a great base under other products.

Cons: I haven't been able to find the actual HA % anywhere in english. It feels more effective than TJ's, but less effective than TO's serum. The scent is the strongest of the three – a bit rubbery and off-putting. Because I have to use more of it per application to yield the same results, the lower price per ounce may not actually be a better deal. Getting it imported to the US can also be a pain and shipping times aren't necessarily consistent.

Conclusion: TO's formula wins for me, but the brand doesn't. I'll stick with Hada Labo for now and deal with the shipping (but will pick up a more convenient bottle from TJ's if I'm in a pinch!)

Last but certainly not least, Greaves says to make sure you only use your retinol product at night. "And while you should be wearing SPF every day anyways, it’s important to be extra diligent once retinol becomes a staple in your routine, since it can make the skin more sensitive to UV rays and thus more susceptible to sun damage," she adds.

Beauty Editors Are Obsessed With This Retinol Product

Shopping for a retinol isn’t as simple as, say, picking out a new cleanser. There’s a lot to take into consideration, especially if you’ve never used the ingredient before. For starters, you need to pick a percentage (most range from 0.01 to 1%). On top of that, you have the decision of choosing between different formulas, such as a serum, mask, or cream. To keep your stress at bay, TZR asked beauty editors their favorite retinol products on the market. No need to click through pages and pages of reviews, you can count on these experts for the best recommendations.

If you are new to retinol, you’ll want to pick up a few tips from these knowledgeable editors. "I always suggest the low and slow model for any new product but especially a retinoid since the risk of irritation is higher," Hannah Baxter, Coveteur’s Senior Beauty Editor, tells TZR. "I’d start with three days a week at night, and then to avoid any acids or harsh exfoliation during the use and the day before and after." Additionally, Baxter notes to keeps in mind that it can take a few months to see tangible results, so don’t be afraid to stick with it.

When Kayla Greaves, Senior Beauty Editor at InStyle, is shopping for a retinol, she always looks at the concentration. "Each person’s skin is different and not everyone can handle high strength vitamin A products," the editor explains. She suggests starting with the lowest concentration (like a product with 0.01% retinol), and then work your way up. "I also pay attention to the other ingredients in the formula. Some of the most common side effects of using a retinol is dry, red, flaky skin." Therefore, Greaves says it’s important to know if there are soothing ingredients (like vitamin E and aloe) alongside the active to aid in alleviating some of the potential irritation.

If you haven’t yet heard of – or tried – CeraVe, consider this article your call to action. A budget brand that develop formulas under the discerning eye of dermatologists, it offers skincare that harnesses the power of ceramides to fortify the skin barrier, as well as other innovative ingredients. From the Hydrating Cleanser to the Facial Moisturising Lotion, those that know about it swear by it, and dermatologists regularly recommend its products to their clients for good and gentle home skincare. It is, quite simply, pharmacy skincare at its finest.

I’ve Found The Best Hyaluronic Acid Serum In The World – And It’s Under £20

If, like me, you’re on an eternal quest to quench your dehydrated skin, there is an exciting new skincare gem destined for your face. CeraVe’s new Hyaluronic Acid Serum, which launched in the UK this week, is exactly that, and at less than £20, it’s a product I feel compelled to shout about.

If you haven’t yet heard of – or tried – CeraVe, consider this article your call to action. The new Hyaluronic Acid Serum is just as stand-out as its now-cult companions in the range. Unlike the jelly-esque texture of traditional hyaluronic acid (HA) formulas (which can often feel quite tacky, and not for everyone), CeraVe’s offering is delivered via a lightweight, ceramide-rich cream that essentially offers a two-in-one hydrator. Tom Allison, founder of the brand, explains why: “We were really thinking about what HA does and what is unique about it. It’s a wonderful ingredient, it attracts water to the site of application and is one of the most effective humectants out there,” he says. “But what it’s not going to do is help mitigate why you’re dry in the first place.”

The resulting “creamy serum” contains a high concentration of the HA active, but in true CeraVe style, also tackles the issue of transepidermal water loss (or dehydration) through an impaired skin barrier. That, after all, is what actually makes the skin dehydrated in the first place. “It takes advantage of HA but also restores the skin barrier at the same time,” he says. As well as HA, ingredients include glycerin, vitamin B5, three different ceramides, and the brand’s patented MVE technology, all of which works hard to keep the skin barrier strong and healthy, while locking hydration in.

I have to say, I am impressed. Upon application, it sinks immediately into skin (always a plus when in a rush), and it acts as a brilliant serum-moisturiser hybrid – you don’t need to use both. It is also worth noting that it works excellently under make-up and doesn’t pill or jeopardise a smooth foundation finish – crucial, in my book. Allison also confirms that any and every skin type, from sensitive to oily, will benefit from using it. “Some dermatologists also advise their patients pair it with [topical] skin medication, like a retinoid – one pump of retinoid and another of the serum – especially if skin is irritated. It helps compound it,” he says.
