However, the list of ingredients is very long and this could make it difficult for some people to use the product if they have sensitive skin.

Those who might have an issue should take special care to read the ingredients before purchasing the product and make sure they’re all suitable for their skin. There are other products on the market like Hydrolyze that do the same, using far less ingredients, but at a similar cost and with similar effectiveness.

The most common eye area issues are puffiness, dark circles, wrinkles and crow’s feet, and loss of hydration. There are countless eye creams available on the market today, making it seem nearly impossible to find the “right one” that meets our specific under eye needs. It is imperative to find a product that has been formulated to address a variety of complex eye area problems.

Below you’ll find some of the most effective eye cream formulations on the market today, in our opinion.

Benefit Puff Off Instant Eye Gel is an undereye treatment gel that helps to “iron” out undereye puffiness and fine lines. This is a cutely designed tube that features a cooling “iron” that allows you to smooth and blend out the eye gel as well as mimics the old spoon in the fridge method of reducing under eye puffiness. The tip of the tube has a cool metal iron shaped applicator on the end which allows you to squeeze out the gel and apply it directly to the eye area using the “ironing” method of gently smoothing under eyes. The applicator has a cool feel under eyes as you apply the gel which in turn does reduce some minor puffiness.

Benefit Puff Off Instant Eye Gel To Help Smooth the Look of Undereye Puffies ($29) is a new Benefit Spring 2015 permanent release! I’m in heaven as I’m always excited when some new product comes along to address my undereye puffiness!

Let’s take a look!

Benefit Puff Off Instant Eye Gel

Benefit Puff Off Instant Eye Gel is an undereye treatment gel that helps to “iron” out undereye puffiness and fine lines. This is a cutely designed tube that features a cooling “iron” that allows you to smooth and blend out the eye gel as well as mimics the old spoon in the fridge method of reducing under eye puffiness. The actual eye gel is more of a lightly hydrating eye cream and not so much a gel texture. It absorbs easily and seems to have a little mica in the mix to brighten up eyes but nothing too sparkly or glow-y. I find the cream absorbs very, very easily under eyes but being as dry as I am I don’t find it’s super moisturizing unfortunately but that’s not what it’s marketed for so that’s fine. I do think using the applicator does reduce some puffiness so it isn’t necessarily the gel or cream if you will that’s doing anything to reduce the puffiness. The cooling applicator is nice to smooth away late night or sinus puffiness but if you have puffy, aging eyes this isn’t going to quite work out for you! Personally I blame my puffiness on aging eyes and not so much on late night gaming sessions or seasonal allergies. I see very minor relief in my puff issues when I use it sadly.

I did note that this is a mere 0.34 oz in size at nearly $30 and I couldn’t help but think maybe that money would be better spent towards eye cream!

Benefit Puff Off Instant Eye Gel might be a handy solution for younger eyes but those with aging eyes might not see much of a difference. For me, I didn’t notice a drastic change sadly.

Puff Off!

Here’s yet another eye-area product that offers an “innovative” formula that will fix fine lines and puffiness, but it just doesn’t live up to the hype!

Benefit describes Puff Off! as a gel, but it’s more like a light lotion with a salmon-pink tint. If you have deep wrinkles around your eyes, this light lotion will seep into them, and although the tint fades for the most part once it dries, there’s enough color that it will emphasize those wrinkles.

As for the formula itself, “lackluster” is the best word to describe it. There is only a single antioxidant and a single peptide present, so the anti-aging benefit is practically nil (see More Info for why you might not even need an eye-area product). This lotion is also quite drying; if you’re familiar with calamine lotion, that’s what this feels like when it sets! If you have normal, dry, or dry-to-combination skin this will likely emphasize wrinkles, not smooth them out.

The packaging is definitely clever; it’s housed in a tube with a metal applicator, but the applicator is formed in the shape of a clothing iron to “iron out” wrinkles. While cute, it doesn’t add any benefit to this product; it’s just the same as any other skincare product that has a metal tip. The metal tip can feel cool on skin, but that’s an aesthetic quality, not one that affects how the product actually works on skin. (Needless to say, you can’t “iron” out wrinkles!)

Then there’s the issue of the potential irritants present, which include alcohol, the menthol-derivative menthoxypropanediol, and fragrance ingredients like geraniol. They’re not present in abundant amounts, but they shouldn’t be here at all, especially considering that you’re going to be putting this near your eyes! Definitely give this one a pass, and look instead into one of the much better options on our list of Best Eye Moisturizers.

Pros:

  • None.

Cons:

  • Salmon-pink color settles into deep lines.
  • Contains a paltry amount of anti-aging ingredients; this simply can’t treat wrinkles.
  • Formula can emphasize wrinkles on dry skin types.
  • Contains potential irritants that shouldn’t be used around the eyes.

Why You May Not Need an Eye Cream: There is much you can do to improve signs of aging around your eyes, but this doesn’t have to include using an eye-area product. Any product loaded with antioxidants, emollients, and skin-repairing and anti-inflammatory ingredients will work wonders when used around the eye area. Those ingredients don’t have to come from a product labeled an eye cream or gel or serum or balm—they can come from any well-formulated moisturizer or serum.

Most eye-area products aren’t necessary because so many are poorly formulated, contain nothing special for the eye area, or come in packaging that won’t keep key ingredients stable. Just because the product is labeled as a special eye-area treatment doesn’t mean it’s good for the eye area or for any part of the face; in fact, many can actually make matters worse.

You would be shocked how many eye-area products lack even the most basic ingredients to help skin. For example, most eye-area products don’t contain sunscreen. During the day, that is a serious problem if you aren’t wearing it under a broad-spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30+ because it leaves the skin around your eyes vulnerable to sun damage—and that absolutely will make dark circles, puffiness, and wrinkles worse. Of course, for nighttime use, eye-area products without sun protection are just fine.

Whatever product you put around your eye area, regardless of what it is labeled, must be well formulated and appropriate for the skin type you have around your eyes. You may prefer using a specially labeled eye cream, but you might also do just as well applying your regular facial moisturizer and/or serum around your eyes.

Instead of the usual metallic “roll-on” that actually works to de-puff our undereye area, Benefit came up with a custom ironing tip! It is cool upon contact on skin so it definitely helps reduce eye puffiness! (think of a gold spoon after a crying session!)

But, with constant use, I can definitely see a result on how less puffy my eye look in less than a month of usage!

We tested Benefit Cosmetic’s “Puff Off Eye Gel” every day for a month. On days where we wore make-up, we applied the product under our foundation. After application with the metal “ironing tip” we felt a cooling sensation that was very relaxing. A few moments after, we noticed that the undereye circles and bags were less visible. The effect was almost immediate.

OUR EDITORIAL REVIEW

Packaging:

The “Puff Off Eye Gel” comes in a plastic pastel salmon tube with pink inscriptions on it. The product also has a light blue iron design. The cap is a silver colored pull-off cap and the applicator tip is designed to look like the bottom of an iron. The packaging is very creative: the “ironing” tip dispenses the product and also helps in applying it around the eye.

Texture:

The gel has a liquid-creamy texture.

Scent:

The product has a strong floral smell that doesn’t linger after application.

Application:

Squeeze the tube gently to dispense the gel through the applicator tip. Using the “ironing” applicator tip, massage the product gently around the eyes.

Effect:

The gel itself is very lightweight on the skin and dries very quickly. So, there is no stickiness left by the product. We also noticed that the product works very well as a make-up primer. On days where we used it under our make-up, the “Puff Off Eye Gel” made the skin around the eyes look brighter. The gel itself has a beige-ish tint to it, however, it is transparent when applied on the skin which makes it suitable for make-up application. The “Puff Off Eye Gel” by Benefit Cosmetics did not irritate the eyes or the skin. After a month of testing, we found that it caused no redness and was suitable for sensitive skin. However, the effects of the product are not long lasting. Instead, it is a quick one-day solution instead of an eye cream treatment.

Price:

The “Puff Off Eye Gel” by Benefit Cosmetics retails at an average price of $29/10mL which is pricier than other products such as Clinique’s “Pep-Start Eye Cream” which sells at an average of $26.5/15mL. However, it remains cheaper than other similar products in a different range like Dior’s “Life Sorbet Gel” which retails at $55/14.7 on average.
