It won’t be long before I’ll be writing my quarterly what’s working for me, and here’s a spoiler alert: I’ll be including Alastin Restorative Eye Treatment ($85). This is an excellent eye cream that uses a proprietary peptide-based technology called TriHex, and I have found that it works exceptionally well at lifting the lids and firming the skin around the eye area. It is most definitely a keeper.

According to Alastin Skincare, TriHex works by clearing out damaged, aged proteins in the skin’s extracellular matrix (ECM). This is an important job as scientists are discovering more about the role of the ECM and how its health is vital for disease prevention as well as aging. Although originally considered as merely a support system for the cells within the tissue, the ECM is now recognized as a central regulator of cell and tissue behavior via transmembrane signaling.

Another interesting ingredient that is starting to make its way into new formulas is Darutoside. It is made from extracts from two plants, gotu kola and siegesbeckia, and is an anti-inflammatory and skin repairer. There is evidence that siegesbeckia will inhibit inflammatory mediators. Bark from the mimosa tree is also one of the key actives. It protects skin cells by producing melatonin and is supposed to banish toxic glycogens, increasing cellular energy and reducing the formation of AGE pigments.

Also worth having on your anti-aging radar is epigallocatechin gallatyl glucoside. I have seen this described as a molecular sponge that captures free radicals. Finally, there is a skin-brightening peptide that goes by the name of TEGO Pep 4-Even, helping to make this eye cream useful against dark under eye circles.

Alastin Restorative Eye Treatment is a dense white cream that absorbs easily. I find it hydrating as well as firming, and it has also reduced fine lines. There is no appreciable scent, and I would recommend it for anyone looking for an effective anti-aging eye cream. The good far outweighs the bad in the formula, but I should give a call out to two harsh preservatives (phenoxyethanol and disodium EDTA) , as well as a PEG.
