Survey results show Minnesota students making healthier choices and that many indicators improved from three years ago. The 2004 data are available from The Minnesota Department of Education.
New Edition of MCH Library Knowledge Path: Prenatal Care
In recognition of National Birth Defects Prevention Month, the MCH Library has released a new edition of Knowledge Path: Prenatal Care. Knowledge Path is an electronic resource guide on recent, high-quality resources that analyze perinatal health statistics, describe effective prenatal care programs, and report on research aimed at improving access to and the quality of prenatal care and improving perinatal health outcomes. Lessons Learned and Unanswered Questions About Sexual Assault Perpetration
Antonia Abbey, Wayne State University. The most important lesson learned about interpersonal violence in the past 20 years is the astonishingly high prevalence of sexual assault in American society. The extensiveness of unreported sexual assault has been repeatedly documented through the use of self-report data from well-constructed surveys of victims and perpetrators. In contrast, little has been learned about how to effectively reduce rates of sexual assault perpetration. The present article attempts to answer important questions about the most important thing learned from the past 20 years of research on sexual violence, the most important thing to be learned about sexual violence over the next 10 years, and the most promising methodological innovation in the study of sexual violence from the last 20 years. Internationally known photographer Lauren Greenfield will speak about her five-year photojournalistic journey through the “backstage and dressing rooms” of American girlhood. The resulting photographs became a best-selling book and later a successful exhibit called Girl Culture. The exhibit has toured the country and to date has impacted more than 100,000 viewers. Girl Culture by internationally known photographer Lauren Greenfield features 58 intimate, revealing and thought-provoking photographs and narratives, which capture the tension associated with growing up female in a media-obsessed culture. This exhibit opens the door for conversation between adolescent girls, parents, teachers, clinicians and all practitioners that serve youth. Girls in grades three through twelve, from every corner of Minnesota, are invited to the third annual Girls Rock! the Capitol. The event focuses on education, mental support and citizen action. By getting to know the people and places where government happens, they will gain hands-on real life experience with the issues, strategies and support systems they can use to advocate for themselves. Girls will observe the action at the State Capitol, meet legislators, learn to educate themselves and their peers and develop confidence and leadership skills.
