Websites

  • Child Trends, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research center studies children at every stage of development. Their mission is to improve outcomes for children by providing research, data, and analysis to the people and institutions whose decisions and actions affect children, including policy makers, program providers, foundations, and the media.
  • Florida State University Center for Prevention and Early Intervention Policy focuses on maternal and child health and early childhood issues and specializes on infants and toddlers in the area of school readiness, infant mental health, home visiting and quality childcare.
  • Healthy Teen Network Links for Adolescent Parents Healthy Teen Network (HTN) is a national membership organization concerned with adolescent pregnancy, parenting and prevention that provides information and education to inform practice and policy.
  • Mom, Dad – I’m Pregnant is a website designed to help teens and parents communicate.
  • The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, a nonprofit, nonpartisan initiative whose mission is to improve the well being of children, youth and families by reducing teen pregnancy.
  • Parents Know from the Minnesota State Department of Education offers information for parents about child development.
  • Planned Parenthood – Info for Teens is a website where teens can get information and ask questions of experts on topics related to pregnancy and sexual health.
  • Raisingthemright.org is a website devoted to the work of Amanda van Scoyoc, who spent a year documenting stories and photographs of teen mothers in Massachusetts.
  • Women’s Health Channel website caters to the general public and to teens themselves. Includes general information, personal stories and has peer-to-peer discussion board about teen pregnancy and parenting.

  • 16 and Pregnant: From the MTV show, these stories offer a unique look into the wide variety of challenges pregnant teens face. Includes a discussion guide.
  • InJoy Birth & Parenting Videos offer an entire series for teen parents.
  • Learning Happens Zero to Three features 30 video vignettes that show parents and children–aged birth to 3 years–interacting during everyday play and routines. Can be used with parents to guide them in ways to interact with infants and toddlers and help them understand what a powerful role they play in their child’s development.
  • Parenting Counts offers videos developed for the state of Minnesota’s Help Me Grow program.
  • Talaris Institute offers video clips of parent-child interactions that are useful for parent education.
  • Young Fathers Video and Workshop – Public/Private Ventures: Designed for groups of young men who are not yet parents to help them understand the challenges they will face and the role they must play to benefit their children.

Curricula/Programs/Approaches

  • 24/7 Dad™ equips dads with essential parenting skills.
  • Baby FAST™ is a widely used multifamily group intervention model for young parents and their infants and toddlers (age 0-3). It works especially well for first-time mothers, and is intended to protect vulnerable families with risk factors, such as single-parent families, teen moms, isolated families, or within communities with higher risk factors. Although Baby FAST is supported by school systems and preschool programs as a way to help parents ready their small children for their first learning steps, it is normally sponsored by local mental health and AODA professionals to support parents, especially moms during this critical time in the family lifecycle. It is often used to supplement home visitations for isolated and at risk families.
  • Circle of Security: A group-based program based in attachment theory.
  • Complete Teen Parenting Program: A school-based program for teen parents (Morning Glory Press).
  • NCAST-AVENUW: Offers curriculum materials, handouts and assessments for programs working with parents and infants.
  • Nurturing Parenting: A home or group based program for teen parents.
  • Parents as Teachers/MELD: Curricula materials for teen mothers and fathers. Home visiting materials and group materials available.
  • Power Source Parenting: Written for at-risk teen and young adult parents (Lionheart Foundation).
  • Seeing Is Believing (SIB): A videotaping program useful for home visitors working with young parents.
  • STEEP (Steps Toward Effective, Enjoyable Parenting): A home visiting and group program based in attachment theory.
  • The Daddy Pack: Curriculum for new and expectant dads involved with the Daddy Pack™
  • Together We Can: Creating a Healthy Future for Our Family is a co-parenting program to be used with never-married parents to assist them in working together to develop consistent and healthy parenting strategies for the benefit of their children.
