Making the Connections: A Facilitator’s Guide for a Mother-Daughter Retreat Program About Puberty

Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota has published a new manual: Making the Connections: A Facilitator’s Guide for a Mother-Daughter Retreat Program About Puberty. Since 1992 the mother-daughter retreat program has offered one-day retreats about puberty for mothers (or mentors) and their 10-12 year old daughters. This manual offers a comprehensive guide to assist others in offering similar one-day retreats.

The retreat is based on the latest research on parent-child connectedness and the manual includes a program logic model and recommended evaluation tools so that organizations can design an outcome-based evaluation plan to fit their needs.

The manual can be purchased on the Planned Parenthood website Store. There is an Early-Bird Discount offered through the end of July. In addition to offering Making the Connections, authors Kristen Wubbels Campbell and Robbie Weisel are available to provide a one-day, hands-on, experiential training for five (5) or more potential facilitators. Attention Health Care Providers: The Minnesota Family Planning Program Began on July 1

The Minnesota Family Planning Program (formerly the Minnesota 1115 Waiver Demonstration Project) is an expansion of access to family planning services through Medicaid that allows people who wouldn’t ordinarily meet criteria for other health services to access family planning services only.

This program will serve all Medicaid enrollees between the ages of 15-50 who are exiting the MA, GAMC, or MinnesotaCare programs, for a period of twenty four months, regardless of eligibility category. It will also serve all other Minnesota residents between 15 and 50 who have incomes at or below 200% of federal poverty guidelines.

Any qualified Medicaid provider or clinic can deliver services under this program. The provider determines presumptive eligibility at the time of appointment. This is valid for 30 days, after which the client must apply for continuing eligibility. The Department of Human Services then makes the final determination of continuing eligibility.

The program covers any procedure, supply or prescription that is FDA approved, and would be covered under regular Medicaid as a family planning service. This includes routine physical exams, surgical procedures, contraceptive supplies, and prescription and non-prescription contraceptives.

Testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is covered when done in the context of a family planning visit.

HPV Vaccine Update

The FDA approved a vaccine that protects those who receive it from up to four strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV) that can lead to cervical cancer. The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted in June to recommend that all girls ages 11 and 12 receive the vaccine, called Gardasil. New Study Finds Condom Use Reduces Risk of HPV Transmission

Young women whose partners use condoms every time they have sex are 70% less likely to contract the human papillomavirus than women whose partners use condoms less than 5% of the time. For more details, including policy implications and public reactions, visit www.kaisernetwork.org.

2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey Released

Findings from the 2005 YRBS indicate a positive downward trend of unhealthy behavior among the nation’s youth. Data on sexual behavior indicate that the proportion of high school students who have had sex (47%) remained unchanged between 2003 and 2005, and the proportion of students who used a condom the last time they had sex (63%) also remained stable during the same time period. Annual ‘Kids Count’ Report Released : Minnesota’s Rank Falls for Second Year In A Row

The Annie E. Casey Foundation released the 2006 Kids Count Report. The report measures each state in terms of 10 indicators, including infant mortality, teen birth rate and infants born at low birthweight. While the report shows a decrease in the teen birth rate, there has been a sharp rise in the number of children living in poverty and the number of teens neither in school nor the workforce. New Research Explores Boyfriends, Girlfriends and Adolescents’ Risk of Sexual Involvement

A new study shows that having had a boyfriend or girlfriend by seventh grade is both a predictor of having sex in the ninth grade, and a marker of prior risks for sex. Obstetricians Announce Support for Emergency Contraception

New Report on Violence Prevention from The Prevention Institute

A new report from The Prevention Institute, Creating Safe Environments: Violence Prevention Strategies and Programs provides an overview of promising violence prevention initiatives across the nation, with special focus on the primary prevention of intimate partner violence affecting youth and adults. What’s New With Teens and Their Families? Research Update for Professionals

Offered by the University of Minnesota Extension Service, this online course is designed for professionals working with families of teens and explores current research in:

  • Normative adolescent development and what it means for the parent-adolescent relationship
  • The two-way relationship between teens and their larger family system including child agency and parenting styles

Participants have access to the course until September 30 and can go in and out as often as they choose. The course takes 3 hours to complete, with additional time for reading and online discussion optional. Registration is $45 per person, which includes CEUs. Adolescent Sexual Health: Parental Involvement in Teen Pregnancy Prevention
